Cell Chip Shrink Yields "Greener" PS3

Sony PS3Now that the Cell chip went through a die shrink to 65nm, the Playstation 3 consumes just 135 watts instead of 200 watts. To realize these savings, you'll need to buy the new $399 40 GB version, which lacks a couple of features, including I hear, backward compatibility.

Notice I put greener in quotes in the title. That's because the new design (internal mostly) brings the PS3 from gluttonous power hog to just on par with the Xbox 360. No huge leapfrogging going on here.

On the plus side, it generates less heat, meaning that the internal fans don't have to work as hard to keep it cool. And its still among the cheapest -- if not the cheapest -- Blu-Ray players you can buy.

So if both gaming and power savings are important to you, the new PS3 may be worth a look. And, of course, you'd have to be willing to overlook the Xbox 360's bigger game library or the appendage-waggling fun of the Wii.

Total rubbish. It was proved in independent tests that the PS3 used 200w at max compared to 190w for the 360. The new one consumes 135w which is a 32.5% drop and puts it way below the 360.

The new PS3 uses 28.9% less power than the 360. I'm sorry if that doesn't fit in with your anti Sony agenda but its true.

BTW the 360 certainly does have more games than the PS3 but lets look at what exclusives are out next year on both consoles. On the PS3 we have:

Metal Gear Solid 4
Gran Turismo 5
Final Fantasy 13
Tekken 6
LittleBigPlanet
Killzone 2
L.A. Noire
The Agency
Coded Arms: Assault
Eight Days
FIA World Touring Car Championship
The Getaway 3
Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier
Red Dead Revolver 2
Heavy Rain
Infamous

Which is obviously a damn sight more impressive than this lot on the 360:

Banjo-Kazooie 3
Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2
Dogtag
Fable 2
Magna Carta 2
Mobile Ops: The One Year War
Ninja Gaiden 2
Too Human

the article was about the cell die shrink, any particular reason you had to bring up the exclusives games?

well regardless of the watts, the ps3 still has 3 graphics cards as opposed to 1, and 7 core processors as opposed to 3. Plus the ps3 would never be so cheap as to put in a hdmi port like 2 years later. also 360 has changed their chip from a nano chip that over heats cause it is at 90 watts and reduced it to 65 watts cause 33 percent of the first wave of 360s broke down and microsoft jewed people out of tons of money. I am a manager that works at gamestop and i was told this by the microsoft rep. I actually swap out more defective 360s (they have a warranty, which absolutely no gamestop will offer a warranty on these systems anymore(look this one up to believe me)) than actually sell them. so if i get 8 pros in I swap at least 5 out for broken one and sell 3. where as in the same time period I at least sell 5 to 6 ps3s.
